About Us

All are welcome! Our church is an exuberantly inclusive, loving, and serving community of faith offering God’s promise, Christ’s salvation, and the Holy Spirit’s comfort to all. That means YOU!

Who We Are

On January 19, 1987, a small group of faithful people gathered at DJ’s Pub to worship as gay and lesbian Christians. Our founding members, fueled by the Holy Spirit and the witness of the Gospel of Christ, yearned for a place to call their church home, and for an LGBT-identified person in Wichita Falls, that was not a simple task.  Our newly-founded church opened its doors to all who would come and all who needed sanctuary.  Later that year, this new faith community officially affiliated with the denomination of Metropolitan Community Churches.

Through the years, we have evolved along with the denomination to understand that our ministry is that of spreading the gospel of God’s all-inclusive love.  We began with a primary ministry to provide a safe church sanctuary for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender people who have long been excluded from the church.  Today, we recognize that more people than we/they have been excluded, and our church is passionate about finding a place for all who would but follow Christ’s example.  There is MUCH healing to do in this world!

During our time as a church, we have welcomed hundreds who longed for the gospel of God’s all-inclusive love.  We have provided opportunities to connect with a spiritually-like-minded community intent on reaching out to the margins; following Christ’s example.  We believe that God loves all of creation and, therefore, all people.

Our congregation strives to welcome everyone and anyone who comes to us for spiritual nourishment and purpose.  When newcomers first arrive, we are cheerful in offering food for the spirit and heart.  Soon in time, we hope you will join us by becoming one who offers that nourishment to others!

Our Ministries

We look forward to continuing to be in ministry to the glory of our Eternal Maker! We envision a day when Wichita Falls MCC will be made up of several hundred members, carrying out a wide variety of ministries that reach throughout Wichita Falls and beyond. Our current ministries include (but are not limited to!):

Children’s Moment: We provide a Children’s Moment for the youngest ones among us every Sunday during our regular worship service at 11 a.m. The moment is a special lesson just for them and is part of our worship service.  We welcome children and youth of all ages in our worship.  Coordinator: Gail Murphy

Hospitality Ministry:  The Hospitality Ministry provides for a welcoming atmosphere on Sunday morning through physical nourishment.  Leaders provide free breakfast for all who wish to gather at 10am on Sunday mornings.  The Hospitality Ministry also assists in the organization and running of potlucks, special celebrations, and social events.  Is this your calling?  Let us know!

Voices in Praise (VIP) Choir: For everyone who finds joy in singing praises to our God!  Practice – Once a month on Saturday during Choir Clinic.  We prepare a musical anthem and work on larger productions during the two-hour rehearsal.  Join us on the second Saturday of the month, time TBD.

WFMCC Praise Team: Come praise God with some rhythm! We practice on Wednesday evenings at 6:00pm in the WFMCC Sanctuary.  Just show up and we’ll find you a place!

Deacon Council/Ministry: Our Deacon Council members are available to pray with you, provide communion, and to make hospital and pastoral care visits.  If you have need of the deacons for an emergency, call or text 940-322-4100.  If you would like to learn about the Deacon Training Program or get involved in Deacon Ministry, please contact Pastor Mel at PastorMel@WichitaFallsMCC.org.

Yard Crew: Worship and prayer are essential for every church, and so is mowing and trimming! The Yard Crew keeps us looking our best.  During the spring, summer and fall, the yard crew tends to care for the church lawn and flower beds once every two weeks.  No matter what time of year, there’s always work to be done!  Call/Text 940-322-4100 to connect with the crew!

Community Garden Ministry:  We have a substantial yard, and because we are dedicated to ministering to and with those in need, we offer a community garden for all who wish to participate.  The garden holds multiple vegetable crops that change from year to year.  Garden work may be done on Tuesday mornings from 9am-12pm, or by appointment.  Call/Text 940-322-4100 to set up an appointment to work the garden!  Harvest-able vegetables that are not collected by those who work the garden are distributed to the neighborhood homes and families around the church.

Clothes & Food Pantry:  Our clothes and food pantries are currently in planning and stocking stages.  We are in need of $250 seed funds to begin the food pantry.  Any well-maintained clothing and shoes are welcome…just bring them to the church!  We hope to open both pantries to the public in 2015.

For more information about any of these ministries, please contact pastor Mel Martinez at PastorMel@WichitaFallsMCC.org.

Our Pastors & Places

Rev. David Presley, our first pastor, arrived in February of that year from Ft. Worth with his partner Larry Boyd. The church occupied its first building at 1014 Wichita Street on Sept. 11, 1988. Rev. Presley remained as pastor until August of 1990, when he resigned due to his health.

Rev. Margaret Walker became our second pastor in September of 1990 and served until May 1997. She envisioned us in our own building, and on July 25, 1995 we purchased a church at 1407 26th Street. Rev. Margaret and her partner Monica Warn with us for six years, and we were deeply blessed by their ministry to our community and us.

Our first full time pastor, Rev. Nancy Horvath, arrived in August of 1997 with her partner Barbara. She served with great dedication for six years before moving on to other areas of ministry in 2003.

In November of 2003, Rev. Ed Paul began an intentional interim pastorate, helping the church get ready for our next permanent pastor, Rev. Lea Brown. In 2004, we lost our church building on 26th Street to an electrical fire. On March 26, 2006 our congregation voted overwhelmingly to purchase the property at 1401 Travis Street, which now serves as our church home.

Rev. Brown began her ministry with us in November of 2005 and served faithfully for two years. She followed a call to ministry in California in 2007. In 2008, we received the service of a transitional pastor, Rev. Elder Nori Rost.

Our church searched for a pastor over the course of four years following Rev. Lea’s departure. We were
determined to find the best fit and took our time to find the right person. During that search, two pastors remained faithful in their service of preaching for our congregation. Rev. Margaret Scales, a Disciples of Christ minister, and Pastor Mary Cantrell, a Chaplain at United Regional Hospital (and MCC clergy as of October 2012) provided our weekly messages to nurture our community of faith.

At the congregational meeting on November 13, 2011, the membership of WFMCC unanimously affirmed Rev. Melanie “Mel” Martinez as our permanent pastor. Pastor Mel officially began her service to Wichita Falls MCC on January 1, 2012. We are very excited about having a pastor of Mel’s abilities lead our church.

In January 2012, during our 25th Anniversary celebration, Wichita Falls MCC installed Pastor Mel.
